A new sign at Dunedin Airport in New Zealand is going viral, catching attention for humorously restricting how long people can hug in the passenger drop-off zone. The sign reads, “Max hug time 3 minutes. For fonder farewells please use the car park,” urging travelers and their loved ones to keep their farewells short and sweet.
While the intention is playful, the signage has sparked some lively conversations, particularly on social media, where reactions have been mixed. Some find the rule amusing, while others feel it’s unnecessary and even detrimental to the importance of physical affection. Despite the minor uproar, airport officials maintain that the sign is all in good fun.
Megan Crawford, general manager of business development at Dunedin Airport, explained the lighthearted approach to Stuff, saying, “The signage is in line with our branding, which is to be a little bit quirky and fun in how we deliver a message.” The signs were introduced after the vehicle drop-off area was relocated to improve traffic flow and safety around the terminal. Alongside the hug limit sign, another humorous message reads: “It’s hard to say goodbye so make it quick. 3 minutes max.”
Although the signage is meant to entertain, not everyone is on board with the concept. One Facebook user commented, “Hug Police!? This is just weird! Hugs are proven to have many benefits not to mention mental health. Hugs should be promoted not discouraged.” The conversation highlights how something as simple as a farewell hug can stir strong opinions, with many pointing to the positive effects of hugs on mental well-being.
Dunedin, the second-largest city on New Zealand’s South Island, with a population of around 135,000, is not often in the national spotlight. However, this quirky airport sign has given the city a bit of viral fame. Known for its historic buildings and scenic harbor, Dunedin may not be a top tourist destination in New Zealand, but it has captured attention with this light-hearted approach to airport farewells.
As travelers continue to encounter the “3-minute hug” sign, it remains a reminder that a little humor can go a long way, even in a bustling airport setting. Whether people agree or not, the sign has certainly succeeded in getting people talking.
