North Star Boys: Pioneering Asian-American Representation in Music and Media

LifestyleNorth Star Boys: Pioneering Asian-American Representation in Music and Media

Since their formation in 2021, North Star Boys (NSB) have been trailblazers in promoting Asian-American representation in music and media. Originally a collective of content creators, the eight-member group – Oliver Moy, Sebastian Moy, Tyler Bray, Kane Ratan, Justin Phan, Ryan Nguyen, Darren Liang, and Regie Macalino – has amassed millions of followers across platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. Their fans, affectionately called “the stars,” engage enthusiastically with their diverse content, including skits, pranks, vlogs, and music.

NSB’s journey began when the Moy brothers envisioned a group that could inspire Asian-Americans and showcase their culture. The members, many of whom had backgrounds in content creation, moved to Los Angeles to pursue the idea, leaving behind university plans and jobs. For Tyler Bray, the group’s manager, this leap of faith symbolized alignment with their purpose: “The stars aligned for us.”

The group’s success is rooted in discipline and collaboration. From their early days of sharing bedrooms and creating content for hours daily, NSB cultivated a strong work ethic. Their bold visibility resonated with Asian-American culture, often quiet in the public sphere, and garnered millions of views, creating what member Sebastian Moy describes as “shock waves through America.”

Music became a natural extension of their creativity. What started as a private escape evolved into a defining part of their journey. By the time they released their first single, “You Are My Star,” they had already written dozens of songs. NSB has since dropped two albums, an EP, and embarked on three headlining tours. Tracks like “Kissing Booth,” “Panic,” and their latest release, “Stardom,” have solidified their place in the music scene.

“Stardom,” featuring Chinese lyrics by Liang, reflects the group’s multicultural identity and their goal to connect globally. With plans to expand their reach in Asia, they recently completed a promotional tour in Singapore, Manila, Jakarta, and Hong Kong.

Looking ahead, NSB plans to release three albums in 2025 and produce a documentary by 2026. Above all, the group remains committed to inspiring Asian-Americans and the diaspora to dream big. As Bray emphasizes: “Our North Star is our fans.”
