Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum has partnered with LEGO to create a build-your-own version of Vincent Van Gogh’s famous painting, “Sunflowers.” This collaboration aims to introduce more people to the artist’s life and work through an interactive experience. Museum curator Nienke Bakker expressed hope that assembling the LEGO set would allow people to engage with the artistic process in a unique way, building their own composition much like a painter layers a canvas.

The LEGO “Sunflowers” set consists of 2,615 pieces, featuring adjustable petals to replicate the original painting’s dynamic structure. While smaller in size than the 1889 masterpiece, it remains a complex and time-consuming project to complete. Most of the set is made from existing LEGO bricks, except for a specially designed piece featuring Van Gogh’s signature, adding an authentic touch.

Stijn Oom, a designer at LEGO, highlighted the challenge of selecting the perfect colors to reflect Van Gogh’s distinctive brushwork. The artist’s bold and textured painting style made the transformation into a three-dimensional LEGO model particularly exciting, as the team worked to replicate the shapes and movement of the original composition using LEGO’s existing elements.

As the set officially launched, Dutch art and LEGO enthusiast Rienke Witmer was first in line at Amsterdam’s LEGO store, arriving early in the morning dressed in a sunflower-themed outfit. Accompanied by her husband and two children, she eagerly anticipated building the set. She described the collaboration as a perfect combination of her two passions—art and LEGO. Once completed, she plans to display the LEGO “Sunflowers” prominently in her home as a daily reminder of her love for both creativity and Van Gogh’s enduring legacy.

The release of this LEGO set offers fans of both the iconic painter and the renowned toy company an opportunity to interact with art in a new and engaging way. By blending artistic expression with hands-on construction, the project provides a fresh perspective on one of the world’s most famous paintings. The Van Gogh Museum continues to innovate in its efforts to make art more accessible, ensuring that new generations can appreciate the legacy of one of history’s most celebrated artists in an interactive and playful format.
