Paul W.S. Anderson, known for his work on the Resident Evil franchise, brings a fresh dark fantasy tale to the big screen with In the Lost Lands. Adapted from a short story by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, the film offers familiar elements of political intrigue, twisted characters, and mythical creatures, yet sets itself apart with an entirely new world. Anderson emphasized that the film was created specifically for cinema, providing an immersive experience beyond the realm of television.
Set in a post-apocalyptic future, In the Lost Lands follows Boyce, a rugged drifter played by Dave Bautista, who roams a desolate landscape where civilization has crumbled. His fate becomes entangled with Gray Alys, a powerful yet enigmatic witch portrayed by Milla Jovovich. Known for her inability to refuse people’s requests, Gray Alys is sent on a mission by a queen who desires the ability to transform into a werewolf. Their journey takes them to the mysterious Lost Lands, where they encounter supernatural forces and navigate a kingdom fraught with political turmoil.
As their quest unfolds, Gray Alys and Boyce find themselves hunted by the religious faction of the kingdom, intent on overthrowing the queen. The film weaves a gripping narrative of power, survival, and dark magic, making it an exciting watch for fantasy enthusiasts.
Beyond his leading role, Bautista also stepped into a producer role for the film, aiming to have greater creative input. After years of taking on Hollywood roles with limited control, the former wrestler relished the opportunity to influence the storytelling process. “I care about what I’m doing, and I just want to have some say in it,” he explained.
With its captivating world-building and a unique take on fantasy storytelling, In the Lost Lands delivers a fresh cinematic experience while staying true to the essence of George R.R. Martin’s signature storytelling. Fans of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon will find plenty to enjoy in this dark, magical, and action-packed adventure.
