Cinnamon, one of the most popular spices worldwide, may offer a promising solution for those suffering from chronic migraines, according to a recent study. Researchers from Kyung Hee University Korean Medicine Hospital’s stroke and neurological disorders centre in Seoul have confirmed that cinnamon can provide relief for migraine symptoms that are typically difficult to treat.
In their study, they treated a 73-year-old man who had been experiencing frequent migraines for over three years. Despite taking medication, his condition showed no signs of improvement. The researchers decided to administer an herbal medicine containing cinnamon and closely monitored his symptoms using a 10-point Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) for pain. Initially, the man experienced headaches up to four times a week, but his condition began to improve gradually after taking the cinnamon-based treatment.
By day 42 of the treatment, his pain score had reduced to five, and the frequency of his headaches dropped to once a week. This improvement allowed him to discontinue his regular migraine medication. After 146 days of using the cinnamon-based remedy, his pain score decreased further to just two, and the frequency of his headaches had diminished to no more than once a week, indicating near-complete relief.
Researchers attribute the positive results to cinnamon’s ability to combat inflammation, a key factor believed to contribute to migraines and other forms of nerve pain. Professor Lee Han-gyul, who led the study alongside Professor Kwon Seung-won, explained that the research suggests cinnamon plays a crucial role in alleviating migraine symptoms by inhibiting the production of inflammatory cytokines. Cytokines are substances that regulate the body’s immune response to infections and other harmful invaders. Previous studies have already indicated that cinnamon can reduce inflammation, protect cells from damage, and boost the immune system.
These findings offer hope for those suffering from chronic migraines, providing an alternative or supplementary treatment option. Cinnamon, already known for its culinary uses, might hold potential as a natural remedy for managing and relieving the pain associated with this debilitating condition.
