CultureLondon’s Design Museum Dives Into a Century of Swimming and Style

A new exhibition at London’s Design Museum celebrates the evolution of swimming and its impact on fashion and culture over the past century. Splash! A Century of Swimming and Style brings together more than 200 items that explore the deep connection between design and our love for water, whether in pools, lidos, or open natural spaces.

Curated by Amber Butchart, the exhibition examines swimming through the lens of design, showcasing the materials, innovations, and cultural shifts that have shaped swimwear and aquatic architecture. Visitors will journey through different environments, starting in pools, moving through lidos, and ending with outdoor swimming spaces, each offering unique insights into the evolution of swim culture.

The exhibition highlights the transformation of swimwear from practical garments to bold fashion statements. Among the standout pieces is a 1950s bikini, a collection of Speedo briefs from the 1980s, and a rental swimsuit from the 1920s. A major attraction is an original red bathing suit worn by Pamela Anderson in Baywatch, a symbol of 1990s pop culture.

In addition to fashion, the exhibition delves into the achievements of athletes in aquatic sports. It features memorabilia from Olympians, including the first Olympic solo swimming gold medal won by a British woman and the Team GB trunks worn by British diver Tom Daley. These items highlight the intersection of sport, design, and cultural history, emphasizing how swimming has shaped both athletic competition and personal leisure.

The exhibition also showcases contemporary innovations in swimwear, including adaptive designs that make swimming more accessible. These advancements reflect the ongoing evolution of materials and technology in the industry, ensuring that swimwear remains both functional and stylish.

Running from March 28 to August 17, Splash! A Century of Swimming and Style offers a deep dive into how swimming has influenced fashion, design, and architecture. Whether through historic swimwear, Olympic achievements, or cultural icons, the exhibition captures the enduring appeal of life in the water.
