Beth Trustrum, a 41-year-old teacher living in Hong Kong, achieved a remarkable feat by completing the 16km Lantau 50 race in just over three hours in December 2024. This accomplishment was a major milestone for Trustrum, who had struggled with being overweight for much of her life. Growing up in England, she was fit during her childhood and teens, but university life led to unhealthy habits, including emotional eating and a lack of exercise. As she got older, her weight increased, leaving her feeling tired and experiencing pain in her back and shoulders.
In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, Trustrum, then weighing nearly 100kg, felt frustrated by her inability to keep up with outdoor activities, such as hiking and playing with friends’ children at the beach. Seeking a change, she turned to personal trainer Ally van de Pol for help. Together, they developed a 12-week program focused on strength training, nutrition, and rest. Trustrum was encouraged to adopt healthier habits that prioritized overall wellness, including managing stress and improving sleep quality.
By the end of 2020, Trustrum was able to run 5km and take long hikes with friends, something she hadn’t been able to do just months prior. By spring 2021, her weight had dropped to 62kg, and she has maintained that 36kg weight loss since. Her newfound energy and fitness have transformed her life. In August 2024, she left her stressful job as a school principal and now works at The Shed, an experiential learning school, where she leads outdoor activities like hiking and farming with students.
Although the lifestyle changes were initially challenging, Trustrum’s persistence paid off. She now enjoys regular physical activity, including strength training and boxing. Her diet has also evolved, focusing on fresh, colorful meals, though she still enjoys comfort foods in moderation. With a supportive network of friends and a close relationship with her trainer, Trustrum’s journey is one of ongoing progress. She’s learned that motivation follows action and that losing weight is not about deprivation, but about gaining health, energy, and confidence. Trustrum now enjoys running long distances and continues to push herself forward, celebrating each step of her journey.
