Bolshoi Ballet to Perform in Shenzhen in May as Part of China Tour

CultureArtBolshoi Ballet to Perform in Shenzhen in May as Part of China Tour

The Bolshoi Ballet, one of the most renowned ballet companies globally, will perform in Shenzhen on May 14 and 15 as part of a special tour that includes stops in Beijing. This performance marks the ballet company’s only appearance in southern China during its current international tour, which also includes dates in the Chinese capital. Founded in 1776 as part of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the Bolshoi Ballet has a long-standing reputation for excellence and continues to be a symbol of Russian cultural heritage.

However, the company’s international performances have been significantly impacted since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Many countries have imposed informal bans on state-backed Russian cultural institutions, including the Bolshoi Theatre, to avoid lending support to the Russian government’s actions. Despite these challenges, the Bolshoi Ballet has found a welcoming audience in mainland China, which has not condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine and has continued to extend invitations to Russian cultural groups.

The Bolshoi Ballet’s upcoming tour to China marks its first international performances since the onset of the invasion, following a successful visit to Beijing in 2023. Between May 7 and May 11, the company will once again perform in Beijing before traveling to Shenzhen for their southern China performances. This tour reflects the ballet’s resilience in continuing to bring its iconic productions to global audiences despite the geopolitical challenges it faces.

The Bolshoi’s repertoire in China will showcase the company’s technical prowess and artistic excellence, drawing ballet enthusiasts and new audiences alike. For those attending the Shenzhen performances, it will be a rare opportunity to experience the beauty and grandeur of one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious ballet institutions in person. With its longstanding history and influence on the world of dance, the Bolshoi Ballet’s performances remain a testament to the enduring power of the arts.
