Marvel’s search for a new team-up to replace the Avengers is becoming more complicated. After the monumental success of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has faced difficulty in creating a successor that matches the iconic team’s legacy. Films like Chloé Zhao’s Eternals were meant to offer a new direction, but the response was lukewarm at best. While a reboot of The Fantastic Four is on the horizon, the upcoming Thunderbolts movie has captured the spotlight first—though not without its share of challenges.

Directed by Jake Schreier, a filmmaker who made his name with indie films like Robot & Frank and Paper Towns, Thunderbolts represents his leap into blockbuster territory. However, it’s clear that the film’s creative team is keenly aware of the post-Endgame slump. In fact, there’s a pointed acknowledgment early in the story: “The Avengers are not walking through that door,” one character says, signaling that a new direction is needed. “We have no relatable heroes,” the sentiment continues, marking a shift from the established superhero dynamics that fans once adored.

The problem, however, is that Thunderbolts presents a team-up of some of the most unlikely characters in the MCU. This group of antiheroes—referred to as “defective losers” by their own members—are about as reluctant a team as you could imagine. The ragtag bunch of misfits is not the powerhouse Avengers were; they’re a dysfunctional collective whose lack of unity could be their downfall. The team isn’t just unlikely; it’s somewhat reluctant, which complicates the narrative further.

While Thunderbolts certainly offers a fresh perspective and the opportunity to explore new dynamics within the MCU, it’s hard to shake the sense that this team is struggling to fill the shoes left by the Avengers. The film’s direction seems aware of its own limitations, yet the characters’ lack of harmony and reluctance to join forces may leave audiences wondering if Marvel has truly found the right combination to continue their cinematic dominance. In a post-Endgame world, Thunderbolts may not be the team-up fans were hoping for, but it’s still a team-up worth watching—if only to see where this unexpected journey leads.
