Henry Golding Teases Return of Crazy Rich Asians With New TV Series

CultureFilm & TvHenry Golding Teases Return of Crazy Rich Asians With New TV Series

Henry Golding has revealed that he recently reunited with several of his Crazy Rich Asians collaborators as a new chapter of the franchise is being developed for television. Golding, best known for his role as Nick Young in the 2018 breakout film, shared during a recent interview on the Today show that he has met separately with co-stars Awkwafina and Gemma Chan, as well as the film’s co-writer Adele Lim, to discuss the upcoming series currently in development at Max.

According to Golding, there is a strong sense of excitement among the cast and creative team. He noted a recent meeting with Awkwafina and a prior conversation in London with both Chan and Lim to explore ideas for the series. These discussions mark a renewed push to bring Kevin Kwan’s bestselling trilogy to screens again, this time in episodic format.

Directed by Jon M. Chu and co-written by Adele Lim and Peter Chiarelli, Crazy Rich Asians made cinematic history with an all-Asian cast and became a milestone in Hollywood representation. The romantic comedy grossed nearly US$240 million globally on a US$30 million budget and was widely praised for celebrating Asian culture and identity.

Following the film’s success, plans for a sequel based on Kwan’s second novel, China Rich Girlfriend, were announced. However, progress stalled after Lim exited the project in 2019 over a reported pay disparity with her co-writer. Despite the setback, Lim is now back on board and is set to write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner on the new series, which is being developed by Warner Bros. Television.

Kevin Kwan and Jon M. Chu will also return as executive producers. While specific plot details remain under wraps and no official casting has been confirmed, Lim is reportedly eager to bring back original cast members for the show.

Although Golding didn’t confirm his participation in the project, he expressed optimism about the creative possibilities the series could explore. “We have so much runway to really share the world,” he said, adding that the team is enthusiastic about expanding the universe of Crazy Rich Asians and giving fans more of the beloved characters and stories.
