From Shy Teen to Healing Guide: Sonia Samtani’s Mission to Help Others Overcome Procrastination

LifestyleHealthFrom Shy Teen to Healing Guide: Sonia Samtani’s Mission to Help Others Overcome Procrastination

Sonia Samtani’s journey from a shy teenager with low self-esteem to a respected therapist and motivational speaker is a powerful testament to personal transformation. Born in Hong Kong, Samtani struggled for years with feelings of inadequacy, often silencing herself even in simple situations like ordering food. Growing up in an environment where she felt different—culturally and socially—she wished for attributes she believed would help her fit in, like having lighter skin or blue eyes.

As she matured, Samtani realised it wasn’t her appearance that needed to change, but her beliefs. One dominant belief was that it was safer to be invisible. This subconscious defence mechanism kept her from standing out or speaking up, triggering a “flight” response rooted in vulnerability.

It was during her university years in Wales that she began confronting her fears through self-coaching. Today, she is a clinical hypnotherapist, life coach, TEDx speaker, and founder of All About You, a wellness centre in Sheung Wan. The centre blends science and spirituality, offering a wide range of healing therapies from mindfulness to regression therapy.

Samtani is now helping others work through patterns like procrastination—something she describes not as a productivity problem, but a coping mechanism tied to emotional avoidance. On May 29, she will lead a workshop addressing the deeper roots of procrastination, such as fear of failure or feelings of overwhelm.

“When a task triggers negative emotions, the mind seeks safety by avoiding it,” Samtani explains. Instead of doing nothing, procrastinators often divert their energy into other “productive” tasks—like cleaning or making calls—that feel safer. This provides temporary relief and a dopamine hit without confronting the true source of discomfort.

Her method combines regression therapy and inner child work to uncover and heal the emotional wounds behind the avoidance. She encourages participants to explore what they are truly afraid of—failure, rejection, or being overwhelmed—and to nurture the vulnerable parts of themselves with compassion.

Samtani also advocates for small, practical steps, like committing just five minutes to a task. By reframing the goal and showing up consistently, even in small ways, individuals can break the cycle of procrastination and build emotional resilience. Entry to the workshop is HK$350 (US$45).
