Dinosaurs have never gone out of style. Their timeless appeal in museums and media is undeniable, and now the BBC revives the classic 1999 series Walking with Dinosaurs with a fresh six-part continuation, Legends Unearthed. This new series blends stunning visual effects with science-based storytelling, aiming to show dinosaurs as more than just fearsome predators.
Instead of portraying them solely as monstrous reptiles, Legends Unearthed humanizes them. Dinosaurs are given names and personalities based on real fossil evidence, including details about injuries, habitats, diets, and social structures. Each episode focuses on a specific dinosaur, bringing their world to life as emotionally engaging stories. Thomas Scott, head of development at BBC Studios Science Unit, says the goal was to create narratives where viewers could empathize with the creatures, much like with big cat documentaries.
One standout character is Sobek, a Spinosaurus featured in episode two. Living 100 million years ago in what is now the Sahara Desert, Sobek is portrayed as a devoted single father caring for a group of young hatchlings. The episode reveals his struggles and responsibilities, showing the softer, social side of a dinosaur often viewed as a terrifying predator.
Another episode follows Clover, a young Triceratops in what will become Montana. Separated from her herd, Clover faces threats from towering Tyrannosaurs and massive winged reptiles. Her story, both touching and perilous, underscores the vulnerability and complexity of prehistoric life.
Palaeontologist Dr. Nizar Ibrahim, who features in the series, emphasizes the importance of understanding “deep time” to grasp modern challenges like climate change and extinction. He notes that palaeontology offers critical insights into Earth’s past, helping frame today’s environmental issues. Ibrahim, known for discovering the only complete Spinosaurus skeleton, brings his field experience to the screen, sharing real-world adventures that rival fiction—from dodging venomous vipers to transporting fossils across continents.
Narrated by Bertie Carvel, the series uses cutting-edge CGI and actual fossil site footage to merge science and storytelling. It not only rekindles fascination with dinosaurs but also serves as an accessible gateway into scientific discovery, making it clear that the thrill of uncovering the past is as real and compelling as the creatures themselves.
