Masked Chinese Singer Sparks Debate Ahead of Concert Debut

LifestyleMasked Chinese Singer Sparks Debate Ahead of Concert Debut

A 20-year-old singer from China known only by her online alias “wangzaixiaoqiao” is making headlines with plans to hold her first live concert—without ever revealing her face. With over 22 million followers on social media, she has built a loyal fan base solely through her voice and digital persona, never showing her real appearance in public.

Hailing from Shanxi province, she rose to fame five years ago by uploading a cappella covers on a leading social platform. Her voice, described by fans as “kissed by an angel,” quickly gained attention. She uses an animated cartoon avatar to mask her identity in all videos and appearances. Recently, her collaborations with prominent celebrities such as singer Han Hong and actress Yao Chen have further boosted her popularity. One duet with Han Hong has garnered more than 11 million likes.

Her first concert was originally scheduled for August 9 in Shanghai but has since been postponed, with no new date announced yet. When it takes place, it will mark the first time a completely masked performer headlines a concert in China.

In response to growing public curiosity and skepticism, Warner Music China, the event’s organiser, released a statement assuring fans and authorities that the performer is indeed the real “wangzaixiaoqiao.” According to the statement, she has signed performance documents and submitted them to the proper government departments. The custom-made mask for the event includes a bridal net layer that allows her voice to pass through clearly to the microphone. Authorities are expected to supervise the concert closely to ensure it is performed live and not lip-synched.

The singer’s decision to remain anonymous is rooted in past trauma. She revealed during a livestream that she had been stalked and continues to suffer anxiety about her appearance. She expressed that she wants the public to focus purely on her music and maintain a clear boundary between her personal life and online persona.

While many support her artistic approach and privacy, others question the value of a concert where the performer’s face remains unseen. Still, her innovative take on performance continues to spark debate—highlighting shifting expectations in the age of digital celebrity.
