Naomi Campbell’s Iconic Career Celebrated in V&A Exhibition

LifestyleFashionNaomi Campbell's Iconic Career Celebrated in V&A Exhibition

Naomi Campbell brings her iconic style and runway charisma to London’s V&A Museum this week with a new exhibition, “Naomi: In Fashion.” This exhibition, opening to the public on Saturday, is the first of its kind dedicated to a model, showcasing Campbell’s illustrious career, influence, and activism in the fashion world.

Curated by former British Vogue editor Edward Enninful, the exhibition features glamorous dresses, towering heels, and a collection of Campbell’s fashion photographs and magazine covers. “There have been many exhibitions about fashion designers and photographers, but the model is often left out of the story,” remarked Sonnet Stanfill, senior curator of fashion at the V&A. “Naomi Campbell’s remarkable 40-year career proves she’s an exemplar in the field, not only working with top designers and photographers but also using her platform to spotlight emerging creatives.”

Campbell, 54, began her modeling career as a teenager and has since worked with fashion giants such as Versace, Chanel, Prada, and Dolce & Gabbana. She has also been a strong advocate for African designers. As the first Black model to grace the covers of French Vogue, Time magazine, and American Vogue’s key September issue, Campbell has broken significant barriers in the industry.

The exhibition showcases outfits from renowned designers, including the late Gianni Versace and Azzedine Alaïa, as well as pieces from African designers like Kenneth Ize and Thebe Magugu. Highlights include the sparkling Dolce & Gabbana dress Campbell wore on her last day of community service at a New York garbage depot—following her guilty plea for reckless assault—and the blue platform shoes she famously fell in during Vivienne Westwood’s Autumn-Winter 1993 show.

Running until April 6, 2025, the exhibition includes written and audio commentary from Campbell herself, reflecting on key moments of her career. Visitors can also experience a makeshift catwalk, allowing them to emulate Campbell’s legendary runway walk.

“Naomi: In Fashion” celebrates Campbell’s enduring impact on the fashion industry, highlighting her journey, achievements, and the significant role she has played in shaping modern fashion. The exhibition not only honors her career but also her efforts to champion diversity and support emerging talent in the fashion world.
