In an electrifying display at the Chengdu FISU Games, Hong Kong, China’s fencing sensation and Olympic gold medalist, Cheung Ka-long, further solidified his reputation as one of the sport’s finest talents. Demonstrating resilience, skill, and a competitive edge, Cheung secured a gold medal victory in the men’s foil individual bout, overcoming France’s formidable fencer, Loisel Pierre, with a 15-12 scoreline.
The bout began with Cheung at a slight disadvantage, trailing Pierre 2-4. However, exhibiting the tenacity that has come to define his fencing style, Cheung recalibrated his strategy, clinching five consecutive points and gradually seizing control of the match.
The men’s foil competition saw an impressive turnout with 68 participants split into 10 groups. With only 50 fencers making the cut to the knockout stage, the competition was fierce. Undeterred, Cheung, with his impeccable form, navigated the group stage seamlessly, boasting an unblemished record of six victories. The knockout rounds witnessed Cheung’s fencing mastery as he outclassed competitors from Chinese Taipei, Hungary, France, and even a fellow teammate from Hong Kong. These victories culminated in his gold-medal-winning performance in the championship bout.
At 26 years of age, Cheung has had a remarkable journey in the fencing arena. The Chengdu FISU Games marked his first participation in the Universiade, and interestingly, it’s also set to be his last. The significance of this event was further amplified for him, as it was his maiden multi-sport event following his commendable achievements at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
It’s worth reminiscing about Cheung’s extraordinary feat in Tokyo, where he etched his name in history. He emerged as Hong Kong, China’s inaugural Olympic fencing gold medalist, stunning the fencing community by besting the favorite and then-reigning champion, Daniele Garozzo, with a 15-10 victory in the men’s individual foil final in 2021.
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s commitment to the Chengdu Games was evident in its largest-ever delegation, comprising a robust team of 142 athletes. In the realm of fencing, the Hong Kong squad has been nothing short of exemplary.
Earlier in the week, another fencing prodigy from Hong Kong, Hsieh Kaylin Sin-yan, caught the spotlight by clinching gold in the women’s sabre individual event, marking the first fencing gold for the delegation at the Games. Additionally, Cheung’s teammate, Lu Jian-ming, showcased his skills, securing a bronze in the individual foil event.
Cheung’s journey at the Chengdu Games isn’t over yet. He’s set to compete in the men’s foil team event, representing Hong Kong, China. Building on his previous successes, including leading the Hong Kong Fencing Team to a bronze at the 2023 World Fencing Championships, Cheung remains resolute in his goal to achieve even greater milestones and inspire his team to ascend the global rankings.
