Lionel Messi’s 2022 World Cup Jerseys Set for Historic Auction

SportsLionel Messi's 2022 World Cup Jerseys Set for Historic Auction

In a remarkable event set to capture the attention of football fans and collectors worldwide, a collection of six jerseys worn by Lionel Messi during Argentina’s triumphant 2022 World Cup campaign is slated for auction in December. Hosted by Sotheby’s, this auction is expected to make history in the realm of sports memorabilia, with the collection’s value estimated to exceed $10 million.

These jerseys represent key moments from Argentina’s journey to World Cup glory, with Messi wearing them during critical matches. The collection includes jerseys from the group-stage rounds against Saudi Arabia and Mexico, as well as pivotal games against Australia, the Netherlands, Croatia, and the memorable final against France. This tournament marked a career milestone for Messi, as he led Argentina to victory after four previous World Cup attempts.

Sotheby’s announcement highlights the significance of this auction, anticipating it to become the most valuable collection of sports memorabilia ever sold. The auction reflects the growing market interest in sports-related items, with enthusiasts keen to own a piece of history.

A notable aspect of this auction is its charitable component. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the UNICAS Project, led by Sant Joan de Déu (SJD) Barcelona Children’s Hospital, and supported by the Leo Messi Foundation. This project focuses on aiding children with rare diseases, aligning Messi’s football legacy with a cause that impacts the lives of many.

The record for the most expensive individual sports jersey sold at auction currently belongs to a basketball jersey worn by Michael Jordan during his 1998 NBA finals run with the Chicago Bulls, fetching $10.1 million last year. Messi’s jerseys are poised to challenge this record, underscoring the immense global impact of the Argentine football legend.

The auction, facilitated by U.S. tech startup AC Momento, which specializes in managing athletes’ memorabilia collections, offers a unique opportunity for fans and collectors. The jerseys will be on free public display from November 30 to December 14, allowing admirers a chance to witness these iconic pieces of football history before they find new homes.

This auction not only celebrates Messi’s remarkable achievements on the football field but also opens a window into the world of sports memorabilia, where passion for the game and its heroes transcends into the realm of art and collectibles. As the date draws near, anticipation builds for what is set to be a historic event in the world of sports auctions.
