Yusuf Dikec, a Turkish shooter and former officer of the Turkish Gendarmerie, has become a social media sensation thanks to his distinctive style at the Paris Olympics. Dikec, alongside Sevval Ilayda Tarhan, secured a silver medal in the mixed team 10-meter air pistol event. However, it was his laid-back demeanor and unconventional attire at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre that truly captured the internet’s attention.
Dikec’s casual approach, featuring one hand in his pocket while shooting, sparked a plethora of memes and admiration online. The French embassy in Turkey even joined in on the fun, posting on social media, “Be cool like Yusuf Dikec.” Unlike his competitors, who typically don visors, chunky ear defenders, and specialized shooting lenses, Dikec opted for a simple yellow ear plug. His silver hair, intense gaze, regular glasses, and a jersey resembling a casual t-shirt added to his unique charm.
The 51-year-old’s style was seen as a refreshing departure from the norm in the shooting sports community. Even the common practice among pistol shooters of keeping their non-shooting hand tucked in a pocket was highlighted as part of Dikec’s nonchalant appeal. Despite his newfound fame, Dikec, who has competed in every Olympics since his debut in Beijing in 2008, remained humble and slightly bemused by the attention.
Teammate Sevval Ilayda Tarhan praised Dikec’s style, emphasizing that his choice of minimal equipment is a personal preference that makes him comfortable. “I’m proud of him, but it’s not that he does not have equipment. He’s used to shooting with regular glasses and does not need extra gear,” Tarhan explained. She also noted Dikec’s warm personality, saying, “You can crack jokes with him, share anything with him. I’m happy to see him getting the attention.”
Dikec himself expressed surprise at the level of recognition he received. “I didn’t anticipate such a level of recognition,” he told Turkish media upon his return. “Since I shoot with my both eyes open, I don’t find the equipment very comfortable.”
Looking ahead, Dikec and Tarhan plan to continue their Olympic journey, aiming for gold at the Los Angeles Games in four years. “We were hoping to win gold here too, and we are among the best pistol teams,” Tarhan said. “Hopefully we’ll win it in Los Angeles.”
Yusuf Dikec’s relaxed yet focused approach to shooting has not only earned him a silver medal but also a legion of fans who appreciate his unique style and dedication to the sport.
