Shanghai Disney Resort is set to unveil a new Zootopia-themed attraction this Wednesday, marking a significant step in capitalizing on the growing demand for travel and entertainment experiences in post-pandemic China. Zootopia, a widely acclaimed animated film that debuted in Chinese cinemas in 2016, has maintained its status as one of the country’s most successful imported animated films, making this addition particularly appealing to the resort’s visitors.
The Zootopia attraction represents the first of its kind globally and will become the eighth themed area at the Shanghai Disney Resort. The resort, which opened its doors in 2016, previously expanded in 2018 with the introduction of a Toy Story-themed area. This new expansion is expected to draw even more visitors, adding to the already vibrant and diverse array of attractions at the resort.
In the wake of COVID-19, China has observed a gradual but significant rebound in domestic travel and experience-based consumption. Shanghai Disney Resort has emerged as a primary beneficiary of this trend, with increased footfall and visitor engagement. Joe Schott, the President and General Manager of Shanghai Disney Resort, highlighted the shift in consumer behavior, noting a marked increase in people seeking to experience life and engage in outdoor activities as they emerge from the pandemic’s restrictions.
Walt Disney Company, in its latest fourth-quarter earnings report, underscored the role of higher attendance at its Shanghai and Hong Kong parks in driving a 31% growth in its Experiences division, which encompasses its theme parks. This growth is indicative of a broader recovery in the leisure and entertainment sector, with theme parks playing a pivotal role.
Shanghai Disney Resort is a joint venture, with a major stake of 57% held by the Chinese state-owned Shendi Group. The introduction of the Zootopia-themed attraction is poised to add a new dimension to the resort’s offerings, blending the enchantment of Disney with the unique appeal of one of the most beloved animated movies in recent years. The resort’s continuous evolution and expansion underscore its commitment to delivering unparalleled experiences to visitors from China and around the world.
