The church, no longer in regular use for religious services, has been repurposed to provide a communal space that brings the community together in celebration of the festive season.
Organizers have thoughtfully integrated the rink with the church’s traditional elements, including a beautifully arranged nativity scene that adds to the festive atmosphere. The church’s ceiling serves as a canvas for projections of a starry night, enhancing the ethereal experience for skaters as they move across the ice.
One of the young skaters, 12-year-old Ella-June Briers, captures the essence of the experience, noting the deep connection between the Christmas spirit and the church setting. She remarks, “It’s more about Christmas. Christmas is about the church and Jesus.”
Adding to the allure of this winter wonderland is the rink’s commitment to sustainability. Philip Bronckaerts, chairman of the Sint-Truiden trade association and the driving force behind the market, highlights the eco-friendly nature of the ice rink. “It’s very ecological to use this ice rink because it’s CO2-neutral. We’re not using any water or electricity,” he explains. This innovative approach not only offers a fun and immersive experience but also aligns with contemporary environmental concerns.
