In East Asia, and particularly in China, veganism has seen a surge in popularity for several reasons including historical, cultural, health, and environmental factors.
Buddhism, which promotes non-violence and compassion towards all living beings, has a strong influence in East Asia. While not all Buddhists are vegetarian or vegan, the philosophy does encourage a plant-based diet. Additionally, traditional Chinese medicine, which has been practiced for thousands of years, often emphasizes the consumption of plant-based foods and herbs for optimal health.
There is a growing awareness of the health benefits associated with a plant-based diet, including lower risks of heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. The SARS outbreak in 2003 and the more recent COVID-19 pandemic, which originated from animal markets, have also raised concerns about the consumption of animal products and have led to increased interest in plant-based diets.
The environmental impact of animal agriculture, including deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and water usage, is another reason for the growing popularity of veganism. China is the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, and there is increasing pressure, both domestically and internationally, for the country to adopt more sustainable practices. A plant-based diet is seen as one way to reduce an individual’s environmental footprint.
The Chinese government has also been supportive of the shift towards plant-based diets. In 2016, the government released new dietary guidelines which recommended reducing meat consumption. This was seen as a way to improve public health as well as to reduce the environmental impact of the country’s rapidly growing meat consumption.
The availability of plant-based products has also increased in recent years, with many international and local companies entering the market. Innovations in plant-based meat and dairy alternatives have made it easier for people to adopt a vegan diet without feeling like they are missing out on their favorite foods.
While veganism is growing in popularity in East Asia and China, it is still a relatively small movement, and meat consumption remains high. However, with increasing awareness of the health, environmental, and ethical benefits of a plant-based diet, and with the support of the government and the private sector, it is likely that veganism will continue to gain traction in the region.
