In a grand display of cultural and business prowess, the United Kingdom has marked its inaugural participation in the 2023 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) by bringing together its most extensive business delegation ever. This remarkable commitment is further emphasized by the UK’s distinguished status as the guest country of honor.
The British National Pavilion stood out as a magnet for visitors on Sunday, with captivating live performances drawing large crowds. Enthusiastic attendees immersed themselves in the cultural extravaganza, capturing moments on their cameras and smartphones. Many even sported shirts adorned with logos and names of iconic British music bands, highlighting the deep-rooted cultural bridge between the UK and China.
Speaking on this notable occasion, Sector Director and Minister Counselor Sohail Shaikh of the UK’s Department for Business and Trade stated with pride, “We’re elated to be the guest country of honor at this prestigious event.” He emphasized the global recognition and significance of the UK’s music industry, a sector that has often been a source of pride and economic strength for the nation.
Shan Wei, the dynamic CEO of Midi Productions, which organizes the renowned Midi Festival in China, acknowledged the profound impact of British music on the Chinese scene. Highlighting the emergence of ‘Chinese British bands’ like Penicillin, Shan observed, “Their unique sound is undeniably inspired by iconic British bands.”
More than just music, the UK’s influence permeates the Chinese music scene’s broader facets, from music publishing and promotion to festival production. Such British models have played an instrumental role in sculpting the trajectory of China’s music industry.
Highlighting the significance of live performances and music festivals in the British music culture, Shaikh expressed optimism about the future collaborations between the two nations. He envisions an influx of British talents gracing Chinese festivals, further solidifying the cultural bond.
Having carved out a niche over three decades, the Midi Festival stands as a testament to China’s evolving music scene. According to Shan, the growing affinity of young Chinese individuals towards live music and festivals underscores the potential of such events in bridging cultural divides. International artists’ increasing participation only magnifies the opportunity for cross-border interactions.
“Beyond just music festivals, platforms like CIFTIS also play a pivotal role. They foster dialogues, promote mutual understanding, and pave the way for enriching collaborations,” Shan added, emphasizing the multifaceted nature of such events.
The UK’s commitment to cultural diplomacy at the 2023 CIFTIS extends beyond music. Over 70 events are scheduled to spotlight the UK’s prowess in various service sectors, from education and sports to healthcare and creative arts. The expansive 240-square-meter British National Pavilion is a testament to the nation’s depth and versatility in service trade. Spearheaded by a state minister from the UK’s Department for Business and Trade, about 60 leading UK enterprises are geared up for business discussions with their Chinese counterparts, aiming to forge new partnerships and collaborations.
