Uncategorized"The Great Wall with Ash Dykes": A Documentary Journey Revealing China's Iconic Wonder

“The Great Wall with Ash Dykes,” a newly released documentary series, offers a fresh perspective on one of the world’s most renowned wonders, the Great Wall of China. British adventurer and extreme athlete Ash Dykes leads this exploration, unveiling the Wall’s lesser-known yet captivating aspects. This international collaboration, initiated by the China Intercontinental Communication Center and produced by teams from China, the UK, Singapore, and the Netherlands, comprises six episodes and has been broadcast on CCTV 9, China’s state TV documentary channel.

The series delves into various facets of the Great Wall, including its underwater sections, wildlife, and the dedicated individuals safeguarding this ancient marvel. Over 100 days of shooting, Dykes interviewed over 50 people living and working near the Great Wall, many of whom contribute as rangers and safety inspectors. These unsung heroes play a crucial role in protecting and preserving the Wall, highlighting their commitment and dedication to this historical site.

In recent years, China has made significant strides in the conservation of the Great Wall, particularly during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25). This effort includes the establishment of national cultural parks themed around the Great Wall and an increase in the number of rangers dedicated to its protection. As of 2021, the number of rangers surpassed 6,000, with nearly 500 in Beijing alone.

Australian director Simon Wise described the series as a journey that evolved from high adventure to a story with more heart, showcasing a different side of Ash Dykes. The series aims to provide a modern love story to the Great Wall, led by Dykes and supported by its protectors.

Technological advancements have also played a pivotal role in the preservation of the Great Wall. Modern techniques like satellite imagery and surveillance cameras are now used to monitor the Wall’s condition, assisting in identifying areas needing attention and protection. Additionally, efforts such as cleaning up sections of the Jiankou Great Wall and using digital technology for restoration and virtual tours have been undertaken.

During his journey, Dykes met British ecologist Terry Townshend, who shared insights on China’s ecological protection efforts near the Great Wall. Townshend’s decade-long experience in bird-watching in Beijing enriched the documentary with perspectives on local efforts to protect the environment and cultural heritage.

“The Great Wall with Ash Dykes” not only celebrates the architectural grandeur and historical significance of the Great Wall but also highlights the human stories and ecological aspects surrounding it. It offers viewers a unique blend of adventure, cultural depth, and environmental awareness, contributing to a greater appreciation of this iconic symbol of China’s rich history and cultural legacy.
