The Berlin Film Festival, one of the most esteemed events in the international film circuit, has announced that Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o will serve as the jury president for its upcoming edition. Nyong’o, known for her powerful performances and her choice of roles that often explore themes of race and the African diaspora, will head the jury that decides the recipients of the festival’s prestigious Golden and Silver Bear awards.
Nyong’o, who holds both Mexican and Kenyan heritage, first gained international acclaim with her Oscar-winning performance in “12 Years A Slave,” portraying the harrowing story of a brutalized slave named Patsy in Steve McQueen’s historical drama. This role not only showcased her immense talent but also set the tone for her career, where she has consistently chosen projects that offer profound narrative depth and cultural significance.
Her filmography includes a diverse range of genres and themes. She played a pivotal role in “Black Panther” (2018), Marvel Studios’ groundbreaking Black-led superhero film, and reprised her role in the 2022 sequel. Nyong’o also delivered a stunning performance in Jordan Peele’s 2019 psychological horror “Us,” further cementing her status as a versatile and formidable actress in Hollywood.
Beyond her work in film, Nyong’o has also made her mark on stage and television.
