Europe Gripped by Winter Storm: Snow and Ice Cause Widespread Travel Chaos

WorldEuropeEurope Gripped by Winter Storm: Snow and Ice Cause Widespread Travel Chaos

A severe winter storm, dubbed Storm Goretti by French meteorologists, has brought significant snowfall and icy conditions across Western Europe, leading to widespread travel disruptions, flight cancellations, and hazardous road conditions. The storm, originating from the Atlantic, has impacted major hubs like Amsterdam and Paris, with lingering effects expected.

Widespread Travel Disruptions

Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, a major European aviation hub, experienced severe disruptions, canceling hundreds of flights daily. Over 1,000 passengers were forced to spend the night at the airport, with temporary sleeping arrangements and provisions made for stranded travelers. The Dutch national carrier KLM reported long queues and ongoing efforts to resume normal operations.

In France, Paris saw significant flight cancellations at both Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports. Public transport, including buses, was suspended in the capital, and trucks and school buses were banned from roads in northern and western regions due to snow and black ice. The national rail operator SNCF warned of delays and cancellations, impacting both domestic and international routes, including Eurostar services between Paris, London, and Brussels.

UK Braces for Further Snowfall

Britain is facing the brunt of the storm, with forecasts predicting heavy snowfall and strong winds, potentially posing a risk to life. The Met Office has issued amber warnings for many parts of the UK, indicating a high likelihood of severe weather impacts, including travel delays, road and rail closures, flight cancellations, and power outages. Rural communities are particularly vulnerable to being cut off. Amber cold weather health alerts have also been extended across England, with expectations of increased mortality, especially among the elderly and vulnerable.

Impact on Other European Nations

Even countries more accustomed to winter weather, such as Sweden and Finland, reported disruptions. In Sweden, trams were taken out of service in Gothenburg due to heavy snow. In Finland, bus services in the Helsinki area faced cancellations and delays due to difficulties starting diesel engines in the cold and poor driving conditions.

Human Toll and Public Reaction

Tragically, at least six weather-related deaths have been reported across Europe, with five in France and one in Bosnia, where heavy rain and snow also triggered floods. While many travelers faced frustration and uncertainty, some Parisians took advantage of the unusual snowfall to enjoy winter activities, with people seen skiing and sledding in popular city locations.
