Online fashion giant Zalando has announced the closure of its Erfurt logistics center in Germany, a move that will impact approximately 2,700 employees. The decision is part of a broader restructuring of the company’s European logistics network, influenced by its recent acquisition of About You.
Zalando’s Strategic Realignment
The closure of the Erfurt site, which has been operational since 2012, is a significant step in Zalando’s efforts to optimize its logistics operations across Europe. The company stated that this decision is a consequence of the recent acquisition of online fashion retailer About You, necessitating a reevaluation of its existing network.
Impact on Employees and Future Plans
Zalando has initiated discussions with the works council at the Erfurt site to establish a reconciliation of interests and a social plan. These measures aim to provide support and future prospects for the affected employees. The company emphasized that operations at the Erfurt center will continue as usual until its closure at the end of September.
Network Restructuring
Following the closure of the Erfurt facility, Zalando will maintain 14 logistics centers across seven European countries. The Erfurt site was the only logistics center of its size owned by the group in eastern Germany. Other major Zalando logistics hubs are located in Giessen, Lahr, and Mönchengladbach.
