President Murmu at Bastar Pandum 2026 inauguration.

President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the vibrant Bastar Pandum 2026 festival in Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, on February 7, 2026. The event celebrated the rich cultural heritage of the Bastar region while highlighting the significant progress in development and the return of peace after decades of Maoist insurgency.

President Murmu lauded the people of Bastar for their unique way of life, celebrating every aspect of existence as “Pandum.” She noted that while the region’s culture has always been a draw, it suffered immensely for four decades due to Maoism, disproportionately affecting the youth, tribals, and Dalits. However, she stated that decisive government action against Maoist terror has brought an end to the prevailing insecurity and mistrust. Many individuals previously associated with Maoist activities have surrendered and are being reintegrated into mainstream society with the support of development and welfare schemes.

The President highlighted the tangible progress in Bastar, with villages now receiving electricity, roads, and water facilities. Schools that had been closed for years are reopening, bringing education back to children. She specifically mentioned the Chhattisgarh government‘s ‘Niyad Nellanar Yojana’ as instrumental in empowering villagers. Furthermore, she pointed to central government initiatives like the PM-JANMAN Yojana and the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan, which are extending development benefits to the most deprived tribal villages. The establishment of Eklavya Model Residential Schools aims to provide quality education to tribal children, fostering a brighter future for Chhattisgarh and India.

President Murmu emphasized the enduring vibrancy of Chhattisgarh’s ancient traditions, citing the Bastar Dussehra as a unique example of tribal culture and brotherhood. She urged the people to draw inspiration from their glorious history to build a bright future, encouraging them to embrace development while diligently preserving their rich heritage. She also highlighted Bastar’s potential for tourism, owing to its natural beauty, waterfalls, caves, and enthusiastic people, noting that improved facilities and initiatives like homestays would further boost visitor numbers.

The President appreciated those who have renounced violence and returned to the mainstream, urging them to place complete faith in the Constitution and democracy. She encouraged them to move forward with hard work and dedication, assuring them of the government’s commitment to their welfare. Drawing from her own journey, she underscored the strength of Indian democracy and encouraged the people of Bastar, especially the youth, to leverage the available development schemes for their progress and prosperity, which are crucial for ‘Viksit Bharat’.
