Sanae Takaichi’s LDP Achieves Historic Landslide Victory in Japan’s Snap Election

WorldAsia-PacificSanae Takaichi's LDP Achieves Historic Landslide Victory in Japan's Snap Election

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi‘s gamble on a snap election has paid off spectacularly, with her Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) securing a rare supermajority in Japan’s House of Representatives. The resounding victory, the party’s largest in its 71-year history, grants Takaichi a strong mandate to pursue her conservative agenda on defense, social issues, and foreign policy.

Prime Minister Takaichi, Japan’s first female leader, called the snap election just 110 days into her term, a bold move that has now delivered a historic win for the LDP. The party secured 316 seats in the lower house, a remarkable increase from its previous 198 seats. This supermajority grants the LDP the power to override vetoes from the opposition-controlled upper house and initiate amendments to Japan’s post-war pacifist constitution, a long-standing goal of the party.

The landslide victory is expected to pave the way for Takaichi to enact a conservative agenda. This includes strengthening national defense capabilities and potentially revising Japan’s defense strategy. Her foreign policy stance, characterized by a tough approach towards China and a commitment to the Japan-U.S. alliance, has been bolstered by this electoral success. U.S. President Donald Trump has already congratulated Takaichi, endorsing her “Conservative, Peace Through Strength Agenda.”

While Takaichi’s conservative agenda and foreign policy initiatives have gained momentum, voters also expressed concerns about the rising cost of living and property prices. Despite these economic worries, Takaichi’s popularity and the LDP’s platform resonated with the electorate. The Nikkei stock index surged to a record high following the election results, anticipating stimulus spending and tax cuts, though questions remain about how these will be funded given Japan’s high government debt.

The election also reflects a broader shift to the political right in Japan. The LDP’s coalition with the centrist Komeito Party dissolved last year, leading to a new alliance with the right-wing populist Japan Innovation Party. Conversely, the Centrist Reform Alliance, which included Komeito, lost most of its seats, prompting its leaders to resign.

Relations with China remain strained, with Beijing’s response to Takaichi’s victory being muted. Tensions have been exacerbated by Takaichi’s comments regarding Taiwan and her past remarks on historical issues. While China has previously attempted to destabilize her administration, analysts suggest Beijing may recalibrate its approach now that Takaichi has a clear mandate. The U.S., however, sees Takaichi as a strong partner, with plans for her to visit Washington to discuss investments and security cooperation.
