The United Nations Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting following joint strikes by the U.S. and Israel on Iran. The urgent session aims to address the escalating conflict in the Middle East, which UN Secretary-General António Guterres has condemned as undermining international peace and security.
French President Emmanuel Macron initiated the call for the emergency Security Council meeting, expressing grave concern over the potential consequences for international peace and security. He emphasized the need for the Iranian regime to engage in good-faith negotiations regarding its nuclear and ballistic programs, as well as its regional activities.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a strong condemnation of the strikes, stating that the use of force by the U.S. and Israel, and Iran’s subsequent retaliation, “undermine international peace and security.” He urged an immediate cessation of hostilities and de-escalation to prevent a wider regional conflict.
Russia and China were among the nations that formally requested the emergency meeting. Their joint statement called for an “immediate cease” to the “illegal and escalatory actions” by the United States and Israel, advocating for a path toward a political and diplomatic settlement.
The Security Council meeting is scheduled to take place at 4 p.m. EST. Britain currently holds the monthly presidency of the council, with the U.S. set to assume the role on March 1.
