Reports indicate that over 2,000 Marines, part of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit primarily based in Okinawa, Japan, are being sent aboard three U.S. Navy amphibious ships. This deployment is part of an amphibious ready group, which typically comprises several warships and thousands of personnel.
The USS Tripoli, an America-class amphibious assault ship, is among the vessels heading to the region. It is accompanied by other San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ships, including the USS New Orleans and USS San Diego. These assets are equipped with advanced capabilities, including F-35B Lightning II jets and MV-22B Ospreys, which can be utilized for various missions such as resupply, assaults, and troop insertion.
While the deployment does not guarantee boots on the ground, it provides the U.S. with the strategic flexibility to conduct ground operations if deemed necessary. The arrival of the USS Tripoli in the Middle East is estimated to take approximately two weeks, suggesting that the conflict with Iran could continue into April. This timeframe extends beyond President Donald Trump’s initial statements about the war being “very complete.”
The increased military presence is a direct response to Iran’s regional attacks and the ongoing conflict, which began with U.S. and Israeli strikes against the country. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has reported striking approximately 6,000 targets inside Iran since the war commenced, alongside the elimination of over 60 Iranian ships and 30 minelayers.
The deployment occurs against a backdrop of complex geopolitical dynamics. Russia, despite its alliance with Iran, has provided limited direct assistance to Tehran in its conflict, contrasting with Iran’s extensive military support to Moscow.
