Research continually underscores the critical role of plant-based foods in maintaining good health. Studies link high consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts to reduced risks of cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and other chronic conditions. These plant foods, especially the colorful ones like citrus fruits, berries, and leafy greens, are abundant in phytochemicals that protect and nourish our bodies.

Michele Wisla, a Hong Kong-based plant-based culinary health coach, emphasizes the comprehensive nutritional profile of plant foods. They provide essential macronutrients—carbohydrates, proteins, and fats—along with fiber, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients crucial for optimal health. Phytonutrients, in particular, serve as the plant’s defense system and act as protective agents in our bodies.

Dr. Anna Herby, a clinical dietitian, advocates for increasing fruit and vegetable intake to manage or even reverse chronic diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or cancer. Emphasizing whole plant-based foods can lead to significant dietary changes necessary for disease reversal.

For daily consumption, Herby recommends at least three servings of fruit and five or more servings of vegetables. Ensuring variety in your diet is key, as each plant offers a unique combination of nutrients. Aim for 30 different plants per week, including beans, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds, to maximize the health benefits.

When preparing vegetables, steaming, stir-frying, boiling, or baking are ideal methods to retain their nutritional value. Mixing raw and cooked vegetables in your diet is beneficial, as some nutrients are more accessible depending on the cooking method. For instance, raw tomatoes are rich in vitamin C, but cooking them increases their lycopene content, a powerful antioxidant.
