Discover Shunde: A Culinary Paradise in China’s Pearl River Delta

LifestyleDiscover Shunde: A Culinary Paradise in China's Pearl River Delta

Shunde, a culinary haven in southern China’s Pearl River Delta, is known as the birthplace of Cantonese cuisine. Officially part of Foshan, Shunde is a unique district with a thriving food culture that continues to attract food enthusiasts from all over the world. Despite its rich culinary history and reputation as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, it often gets overshadowed by larger nearby cities. Still, Shunde remains an excellent destination for food lovers, especially those keen on savoring local specialties like the renowned double skin milk custard, a dessert that showcases the area’s famous buffalo milk.

This dessert is created by boiling buffalo milk until a skin forms, which is then mixed with sugar and egg whites and steamed to create a smooth, silky custard. Often flavored with coconut or fruits, the custard’s creamy texture and rich taste make it a popular choice among both locals and tourists. Alongside this treat, Shunde is also famous for other culinary delights such as fried river shrimps, roast goose, and pomelo skin braised with fish liver, a unique dish that highlights the local ability to transform humble ingredients into flavorful masterpieces.

For first-time visitors, staying in Daliang offers easy access to popular attractions, including Qinghui Garden and Hua Gai Li Street, a bustling strip lined with snack shops and eateries. The city’s charm is further enhanced by its combination of traditional architecture and modern amenities, with boutique hotels like Xiang Yun Sha Garden offering a more intimate experience.

Traveling from Hong Kong to Shunde can be done by ferry, though it’s best to plan ahead as there are only two sailings daily. Once in the city, visitors can explore its vibrant streets, indulge in local delicacies, and learn more about the area’s food culture. Whether dining at a local eatery or participating in ceremonial banquets, Shunde provides an authentic taste of Cantonese cuisine, offering a delightful blend of history, tradition, and exceptional flavors.
