Apple’s upcoming iPhone, set to be unveiled on September 9, will feature the highly anticipated A18 chip, developed using Arm’s latest V9 chip design. The new device is expected to be revealed at Apple’s fall event in Cupertino, California, alongside updates to other Apple products and apps. The A18 chip represents another step forward in Apple’s custom chip design, leveraging Arm’s cutting-edge architecture to enhance performance and efficiency in its devices.

Apple’s longstanding partnership with Arm, owned by SoftBank, remains critical to its innovation in chip technology. The two companies have a history dating back to 1990, when Apple was one of the founding partners of Arm. Apple has been using Arm’s technology to design its custom chips for devices such as iPhones, iPads, and Macs. The A18 chip, built on the V9 design, is expected to push the boundaries of mobile computing, offering improved performance while maintaining the energy efficiency that has made Arm a dominant player in mobile phone chips.

In September 2022, Apple and Arm signed a deal that extends their collaboration beyond 2040, ensuring that Apple continues to benefit from Arm’s advancements in chip architecture. Arm’s V9 chip design has already made a significant impact, accounting for 50% of global smartphone revenue, according to Arm’s July report. The new A18 chip is expected to capitalize on the power of the V9 architecture, delivering faster processing speeds, better graphics, and longer battery life to Apple’s devices.

The collaboration between Apple and Arm is built on a shared history of innovation. In the early 1990s, Apple worked with Arm to create the processor for its “Newton” handheld computer, which used an Arm-based chip. Although the Newton was not commercially successful, Arm’s low-power chips eventually became a standard in the mobile phone industry, thanks to their energy efficiency, which helps prolong battery life.

As Apple prepares to launch its newest iPhone, the inclusion of Arm’s V9 technology in the A18 chip showcases the continued importance of their partnership. This next-generation chip is set to power not only the new iPhones but also future devices in Apple’s product lineup, underscoring the role that advanced chip design plays in shaping the future of mobile technology.
