CureIS Healthcare Files Lawsuit Against Epic Systems Over Anticompetitive Practices

BusinessCureIS Healthcare Files Lawsuit Against Epic Systems Over Anticompetitive Practices

CureIS Healthcare, a managed care services company, filed a civil lawsuit against Epic Systems on Monday, accusing the electronic health record (EHR) provider of executing a “multi-prong scheme to destroy” its business. CureIS, which specializes in technology and managed services for government healthcare programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and other state health initiatives, claims Epic engaged in a series of anticompetitive actions aimed at damaging its operations.

In its 40-page complaint, CureIS outlines several allegations, including interference with customer relationships, blocking access to essential data, and raising unfounded security concerns. These actions are claimed to have been part of a broader effort by Epic to undermine CureIS and limit its ability to compete in the healthcare technology space.

Epic, which manages medical records for approximately 280 million patients in the U.S., responded to the lawsuit by emphasizing its commitment to free and fair competition. A spokesperson for Epic stated that the company believes its customers should be able to freely choose the right solutions for their needs, whether they are using Epic’s products or other services. Epic expressed its intention to address the claims in court and set the record straight.

This lawsuit is the latest in a series of legal challenges Epic Systems has faced in recent months. In September, data startup Particle Health filed an antitrust lawsuit against Epic, accusing the company of using its dominance in the EHR market to stifle competition in other areas that rely on medical data. Epic dismissed Particle’s claims as baseless at the time.

CureIS filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, with the company being represented by Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP, the same law firm handling Particle’s case. This legal battle adds to the growing list of challenges facing Epic as it faces scrutiny over its business practices and market dominance in the healthcare technology sector.
