Walmart is expanding its employee discount program to cover nearly all groceries, including staples such as milk, meat, and frozen foods, in a move designed to help its workforce save more on essentials.
Previously, the 10% discount applied to fresh produce and most general merchandise — from clothing to toys — and extended to other grocery categories only during the holiday season. The change, effective immediately, now covers about 95% of regularly priced items in Walmart stores. Employees become eligible after completing 90 days of service.
In a message to staff, Chief People Officer Donna Morris said the decision came in response to one of the most frequent requests from employees. “We’ve heard your feedback that these savings make a real difference for you and your families,” she wrote. “You have asked for this benefit to be expanded, and we are excited to make that happen.”
The timing comes as rising tariffs spark concerns over higher prices for consumers. While recent consumer price index data showed flat overall food prices in July, certain categories, such as household furnishings and supplies, saw notable increases. Economists and retailers alike are watching how inflationary pressures could affect household budgets in the months ahead.
Walmart has previously cautioned that cost increases may be unavoidable. In May, CFO John David Rainey said the company remained committed to everyday low prices but acknowledged that the scale of inflationary pressures was challenging for all retailers to absorb fully.
By broadening the discount, Walmart may also strengthen its own business. The perk could encourage its 1.6 million U.S. employees to shop more frequently at Walmart stores and online, while also serving as a competitive advantage in attracting and retaining workers in a tight labor market.
The announcement was made during Walmart’s holiday meeting in Houston, attended by store managers from across the country. In a moment captured on video, Walmart U.S. CEO John Furner invited a store manager on stage to reveal the news. The manager, visibly moved, said he was thinking about employees back home who were struggling to afford meals. “Now this is going to help them,” he said.
Walmart is set to release its latest quarterly earnings on August 21. The company hopes that expanding one of its most popular benefits will both ease financial pressures on its workforce and reinforce loyalty among employees.
