BusinessChatGPT sparks new AI wave in China's home appliance and automotive industries

Chinese home appliance manufacturers and automakers are embracing the integration of AI-powered chatbots into their products and services to enhance the human-machine interaction experience. This comes as ChatGPT, with its advanced conversational capabilities, takes the world by storm, triggering a new wave of AI development. Industry experts predict that the application of ChatGPT-related and AI-generated content technologies will boost the intelligent transformation and upgrade of the traditional household appliance industry, serving as a new engine driving consumption recovery.

Midea Group, a Chinese home appliance maker, is among the first to partner with Ernie Bot, a ChatGPT-like AI chatbot launched by tech giant Baidu Inc. Midea will use cutting-edge generative AI technology to upgrade human-machine conversation abilities in the smart home sector. The company said its smart home products and family service robots will have access to Baidu’s Ernie Bot, which has showcased its capabilities in literary creation, business writing, mathematical calculation, and Chinese language understanding. The two companies will carry out in-depth cooperation in AI research and development.

Other companies such as Hisense Visual Technology and Sichuan Changhong Electric are also joining the Ernie Bot ecosystem to integrate Baidu’s intelligent conversational technology into their televisions, large-sized displays, and household appliances.

Liu Fei, research director of the consumer electronics department at All View Cloud, a Beijing-based market consultancy, said the emergence of new AI technologies will better facilitate conversational interaction between humans and home appliances. He noted that the iteration and upgrade of product functions and technologies will stimulate consumers’ purchasing appetite and create new revenue growth drivers for home appliance companies. Leading Chinese technology companies, such as Alibaba Group, JD, iFlytek, and NetEase, are already seeking to develop Chinese-language alternatives to ChatGPT.
