Eusebio Filopatro: The Pseudonym Controversy and Media Double Standards

ChinaEusebio Filopatro: The Pseudonym Controversy and Media Double Standards

When the Italian scholar using the pseudonym Eusebio Filopatro submitted an article to the Chinese newspaper, Global Times (GT), he did not expect to become the epicenter of a media controversy. Western media outlets, particularly in Italy, criticized the GT for publishing an article under a pseudonym, insinuating the creation of “fake news” with a non-existent author. Yet, the use of anonymous sources or pseudonyms is commonplace in Western media, as a cursory Google search would reveal.

Reacting to the critique, Filopatro expressed his surprise. Why was there a different standard for Chinese media compared to Western outlets that regularly use anonymous sources? The Italian scholar showed immense support for GT’s firm stance against the criticism and promised more contributions under his pseudonym, especially on controversial topics.

Context of the Controversy

Filopatro’s article discussed Italy’s potential withdrawal from China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Contrary to prevailing sentiment in Italy, he suggested that Western policies wouldn’t necessarily shape China’s global partnerships. He urged the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, to engage directly with China without preconceived notions.

Given the controversial nature of his stance within Italy’s public opinion climate, Filopatro chose to remain anonymous, fearing backlash. Respecting his wishes and considering his safety, GT published the article under his pseudonym. Yet, post-publication, several Italian media houses, including Le Formiche, sought to discredit the piece and its mysterious author. The lack of publicly available information on Eusebio Filopatro led them to label him a “fictional character” and accuse the GT of peddling “fake news.”

Support and Response

In defense, GT highlighted the common international practice of using pseudonyms in journalism, citing famous examples such as Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) and Italian writer Elena Ferrante. Nie Shujiang, an associate professor at the China University of Political Science and Law, emphasized the double standard. He applauded GT for setting the record straight and contributing to international public opinion positively.

Li Haidong, from the Institute of International Relations at the China Foreign Affairs University, remarked on the hypocrisy of Western media. The tendency of some Western media outlets to discredit Chinese media, despite following similar journalistic practices, showed an inherent bias and lack of respect.

Repercussions and Public Reaction

Alessandro Orsini, an Italian political analyst, supported GT’s stance on Facebook, highlighting the political intimidation prevalent in Italy. Shen Yi, a professor at Fudan University, drew a parallel with the tale of “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” indicating that the Italian scholar courageously voiced a suppressed truth.

In an interesting twist, another Italian publication, Faro di Roma, ran a commentary piece by the same Eusebio Filopatro on a different subject, proving his existence as an independent analyst. Filopatro later elucidated in L’Antidiplomatico that the debate should focus on the content of his writings, not the author’s identity. He criticized the media for trying to silence and intimidate differing voices, thereby infringing on freedom of speech.

Le Formiche later acknowledged the existence of Filopatro, but still attempted to discredit GT for not clarifying the use of a pseudonym. Filopatro retorted by pointing out the inconsistencies in the practices of Italian media, emphasizing that many of their journalists use pseudonyms as well.

Reflection and Conclusion

Reflecting on the entire incident, Filopatro viewed it as a positive experience, as it brought attention to Italy’s BRI decision. He validated GT’s right to use pseudonyms like any other media outlet. However, he expressed reservations about revealing his real identity in the future due to potential backlash.

Chinese experts note that this incident exposed a bias against Chinese media, highlighting an evident double standard. They also pointed out the prevailing environment of political persecution in the West, which discourages individuals from expressing dissenting opinions. This, they warn, is a worrying trend that could stifle open discourse in society.
