The Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) celebrated its remarkable 100th anniversary with a captivating concert held at the prestigious National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing. This momentous event marked the orchestra’s second visit to China, following its previous tour 23 years ago. The BPO’s China tour was initiated by the legendary conductor Zubin Mehta, who had hoped to support the orchestra’s international promotion and secure performances in renowned music centers typically reserved for the world’s most distinguished orchestras. Regrettably, due to health issues, Mehta had to cancel his performance, placing the tour under the capable direction of esteemed conductor Neeme Jarvi from Estonia.
Neeme Jarvi boasts an illustrious career spanning several decades, during which he has conducted some of the world’s most renowned orchestras and collaborated with top soloists. With over 450 recordings to his name, Jarvi is widely respected as one of the foremost conductors globally. Despite taking the helm at the last minute, Jarvi expressed readiness for every performance, emphasizing that he had prepared for such opportunities throughout his entire life.
While in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, prior to the Beijing concert, Jarvi praised China’s substantial investment in well-equipped concert halls. He noted that Estonia could learn valuable lessons from China in this regard. Jarvi highlighted the importance of creating halls with excellent acoustics to accommodate large audiences, emphasizing the significance of fostering a culture that prioritizes music.
The Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1923, holds the distinction of being the most renowned symphony orchestra in Serbia. Over the years, it has collaborated with numerous world-famous conductors and soloists, interpreting works spanning various styles and periods. The orchestra enjoys an outstanding international reputation and is often referred to as “the musical pearl of the Balkans.”
Continuing their China tour, the BPO will grace the stage at the Shanghai Grand Theatre on November 18 as part of the Shanghai International Music Festival. During this tour, the orchestra will have the privilege of performing alongside accomplished soloists and violinists, including Giovanni Andrea Zanon and Huang Mengla. Their repertoire will encompass the timeless compositions of Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Berlioz, and Beethoven, promising enchanting musical experiences for audiences across China.
