This groundbreaking initiative blends the charm of musical theatre with digital technology, aiming to reach a broader audience and add a new dimension to the performing arts.

A Story of Resilience and Determination

“On the Road” is a narrative-rich musical that chronicles the lives of young Chinese entrepreneurs in the delivery industry. Set over two decades starting from 1999, it captures their struggles, dreams, and relentless pursuit of success in a rapidly evolving society. Acclaimed singer A Yunga portrays the protagonist Yao Yuan, while actress An Yuexi plays the heroine Lu Xiao’ou, bringing depth and authenticity to their roles.

A Creative Journey Amidst Adversity

The musical, initially debuted in 2020, was revamped into an online digital format, showcasing the adaptability and resilience of the cast and crew. Director Xiao Jie, under the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, pushed the boundaries of traditional theatre, creating a production that mirrors the real-life experiences and challenges faced by ordinary Chinese people.

A Fusion of Musical and Digital Arts

Transforming “On the Road” into a digital format involved innovative techniques such as multi-angle camera work and split screens, enhancing the viewer’s experience by intensifying each character’s emotions and perspectives. This digital reinterpretation is not just a theatrical show but an immersive experience, combining the elements of film and video arts.

An Iconic Milestone in the Performing Industry

Producer Dong Ning describes “On the Road” as an “iconic example” of the ‘internet+’ approach in the Chinese performing arts sector. This pioneering project paves the way for future productions to blend performing arts with digital technology, making them accessible to a diverse audience.

The online digital version of “On the Road” will be available for pay-per-view on the official website of the Beijing Performance and Arts Group. The musical version is scheduled to make a comeback at Beijing’s Poly Theatre in May 2024, promising an even more captivating experience.
