CultureRuben Ostlund Unveils New Film "The Entertainment System Is Down" at Cannes

Ruben Ostlund, the acclaimed filmmaker and two-time winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or, has returned to Cannes to unveil his latest cinematic endeavor, “The Entertainment System Is Down.” The film, a dark comedy set almost entirely on an airplane, stars Kirsten Dunst and Daniel Bruehl as a couple whose long-haul flight from London to Sydney becomes a psychological battleground when their personal electronic devices fail.

Ostlund’s narrative focuses on what transpires when people are stripped of digital distractions and forced to confront their own thoughts and each other. The premise explores the broader societal implications of disconnecting from technology and entertainment, an ongoing theme in Ostlund’s work, which includes critically acclaimed films like “Triangle of Sadness,” “Force Majeure,” and “The Square.”

Kirsten Dunst, speaking at the project’s launch, expressed her enthusiasm for working with Ostlund, whom she described as a filmmaker who continually pushes the boundaries of cinema. “That’s always my dream to be a part of working with those type of filmmakers,” Dunst remarked, highlighting her alignment with Ostlund’s visionary approach to storytelling.

To bring an authentic and immersive experience to the screen, Ostlund and his team have procured an entire Boeing 747 aircraft. This ambitious setup will allow the film crew to utilize the full length of the plane, from cockpit to tail, enabling continuous tracking shots that enhance the realism and intensity of the confined setting. “We have an airplane, a whole airplane, to not only build a section but that you can walk from the cockpit all the way to the back so you can do longer tracking shots and really create a feeling of being in the space,” Ostlund explained.

This unique cinematic approach is set to visually articulate the claustrophobia and intensity of the narrative, emphasizing the physical and emotional turbulence experienced by the characters. As filming is set to commence shortly, anticipation for this innovative project is building.

“The Entertainment System Is Down” promises to deliver a sharp and introspective look at modern society’s dependence on technology for distraction and entertainment. Through the microcosm of an airplane journey, Ostlund aims to challenge viewers to consider deeper questions about personal interaction and societal norms when stripped of the digital world.
