A childhood dream is about to come true for the 66-year-old actor Fu Chong, as he takes to the stage in a theatrical adaptation of the Chinese war epic Heroic Sons and Daughters. The production, set to open at the National Centre for the Performing Arts on the 70th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice, revisits the heroic deeds of the Chinese People’s Volunteers (CPV) soldiers during the Korean War.
Fu, who grew up being deeply moved by the war epic, said that even after all these years, the spirit and courage of the soldiers who fought for their motherland still resonates with him. The 70th anniversary sees the release of several cultural works, including documentaries and dramas, commemorating the war.
The documentary series, From Kaesong to Panmunjom, currently airing on Beijing TV, takes a look back at the 749-day Korean War Armistice negotiations. The “marathon” of 733 meetings reveals the behind-the-scenes struggle, primarily between China and the US.
The stage play, Heroic Sons and Daughters, brings to life the sacrifices of the Chinese soldiers, focusing on the brave exploits of siblings from an ordinary family who fought gallantly in the war. The elder brother even made the ultimate sacrifice for his country. According to playwright Yu Rongjun, the aim of such works is not only to remember the heroics of these soldiers but also to promote their spirit, encouraging future generations to learn from their examples.
The staging of the play involves meticulous attention to details and realistic settings that bring the war scenes to life. The talented cast, featuring Liu Xuanrui and Mai Duo among others, instill their characters with a sense of authenticity, paying tribute to the brave soldiers who paved the way for peace and prosperity in China.
The story behind Heroic Sons and Daughters goes beyond mere war depictions. Actor Fu Chong shares that everyone can contribute to their nation in their own way, even if it means simply doing their job well. It’s about celebrating the quiet, everyday patriotism that builds nations.
Simultaneously, the series From Kaesong to Panmunjom brings to light the importance of negotiations as an alternative to war. It portrays the challenging negotiations that took place parallel to the battles on the frontlines. Despite various obstacles thrown up by the US, China and North Korea managed to hold their ground and fight for justice.
Professors Zhou Xueying and Zhang Yiwu laud the documentary for its unique perspective that highlights not only the battles but the negotiation process. They state that it effectively presents many rarely seen historical moments based on both domestic and international backgrounds, providing an in-depth analysis of the armistice negotiations.
These commemorative works serve as a testament to the bravery, tenacity, patriotism, and heroism of the CPV soldiers during the Korean War. They celebrate the courage of the soldiers while also promoting the spirit of peace and negotiation as valuable lessons for the present and future generations.
