Farewell Fiesta for Fu Bao: South Korea Celebrates its First Natural-Born Panda’s Third Birthday

LifestyleFarewell Fiesta for Fu Bao: South Korea Celebrates its First Natural-Born Panda's Third Birthday

Thursday was a day of celebration at South Korea’s Everland Resort as the staff, guests, and, of course, the star of the show, giant panda Fu Bao, came together to commemorate her third birthday. It was an occasion of joy, nostalgia, and a hint of bittersweet farewell as it was expected to be her last birthday on South Korean soil.

Born three years ago, Fu Bao, whose name in Chinese translates to a “treasure that brings happiness,” holds the distinction of being South Korea’s first natural-born panda. Her birth was not just a moment of national pride but a significant milestone in the world of wildlife conservation. She has since become an ambassador of her species, inspiring a deep interest and appreciation for giant pandas among South Koreans.

The story of Fu Bao is not hers alone, but a shared tale that involves her parents, Hua Ni (also known as Ai Bao) and Tian Tian (Le Bao). These two pandas arrived from China in 2016 as part of a 15-year research program lease. They quickly found a home in the nurturing environment of Everland Resort, where they have been meticulously cared for.

One name that rings prominently in this journey is Kang Cherwon, a dedicated breeder at Everland Resort. Nicknamed “Grandpa Kang” by Chinese netizens, he gained popularity for his affectionate care and commitment towards these enchanting creatures. His heartwarming interaction with the pandas, and particularly with Fu Bao, was widely celebrated on Chinese social media platforms, fostering a cultural connection over the mutual love for these gentle giants.

However, this birthday bash also carries a tinge of melancholy. As per the agreement under the giant panda research cooperation program, Fu Bao is scheduled to return to China before July 2024. It will be a homecoming for her, as she joins the country of her ancestral roots, becoming an integral part of ongoing efforts to preserve and study her species. While the impending farewell is poignant, the celebration of her third birthday also serves as a testament to the successful international collaboration in wildlife conservation.

Fu Bao’s third birthday party at the Everland Resort is, in many ways, a symbol of the universal love and respect for wildlife. It is also a tribute to the endeavours of those who care for these animals and strive to ensure their survival. As the celebrations continue, the legacy of Fu Bao as South Korea’s first natural-born panda will remain a cherished chapter in the country’s wildlife history.
