Chinese director Xu Lei expressed his optimism about the future of Chinese films in the international market during his speech at the XPLUS Chinese Film Festival in Seoul, South Korea. Emphasizing the shared cultural heritage between China and South Korea, Xu called for increased collaboration and cooperation in the film industry between the two nations.
Xu’s own film, “Summer Detective,” was chosen as the opening premiere for the festival. The comedy revolves around a farmer assuming the role of a village detective, presenting a unique perspective on Chinese rural life. Notably, the film features a non-professional actor as its male lead, offering a fresh angle to portray the nuances of rural existence.
When asked about potential difficulties in conveying a Chinese rural story to Korean audiences, Xu brushed aside concerns, highlighting the geographical and cultural proximity of the two countries. Xu lamented the missed opportunity if mutual understanding through film was hindered, stating, “We have a natural interconnection from location and cultural origins, and it would be a pity if we couldn’t understand each other’s films.” He further expressed his admiration for Korean cinema, citing actor Song Kang Ho as his favorite, and eagerly anticipated enhanced collaboration between China and South Korea in the film industry.
Reports suggest that Chinese narratives and cultural elements have been gaining increased attention abroad, with productions like “Nothing But Thirty” and “The Legend of Fei” finding popularity in South Korea. Xu hoped that Korean audiences would approach Chinese films with an open mind, acknowledging that Chinese people have greater exposure to Korean cinema compared to the reverse.
Within the Chinese film market, genres such as science fiction and suspense have particularly flourished, attaining a level of maturity and recognition. Xu believes that by promoting exceptional Chinese films that are relatable and appealing to foreign audiences, the cinematic medium can effectively portray the story of China in the contemporary era.
