A distressing incident has recently shaken the Chinese educational community, sparking heated debate across the nation. A nine-year-old student from Bocai Meixihu Primary School in Hunan province, central China, suffered a severe head injury after reportedly being hit with a metal triangular scale ruler by a teacher. The details of this event have caused an uproar on Chinese social media, highlighting the deeper issues surrounding the safety of students in schools.
The incident transpired around 4pm on September 6 during an after-school activity. The young girl, whose identity remains confidential, was allegedly struck on the head by her teacher, Mr. Song Mouming, causing a grievous 5cm deep wound. While the exact reasons for the supposed assault are yet to be disclosed, the repercussions of the incident are crystal clear and deeply troubling.
After the alarming episode, the teacher hurriedly escorted the injured girl to the school’s infirmary. There, the resident medical personnel, perhaps underestimating the gravity of the situation, labeled the injury as minor, suggesting it merely required stitches. Deeming it necessary for the girl to receive external medical care, the school directed her to a nearby hospital. However, due to procedural formalities, immediate emergency care was withheld, pending family consent. This led to a critical delay in the treatment of what would soon be discovered as a life-threatening injury.
It wasn’t until the girl’s parents were finally informed and rushed to the hospital that the severity of the situation became fully apparent. Ignoring the initial recommendation to merely stitch up the wound, the distressed mother pleaded for a thorough medical assessment. The results were horrifying: the young girl’s skull was fractured, and bone splinters had penetrated her brain. An urgent five-hour surgical procedure was performed to extract the bone shards.
Relaying the gravity of the situation, the girl’s aunt shared, “It was nearly fatal. Her brain was on the brink of being exposed.” As of the latest reports, the child remains in intensive care in a serious condition. The anguished father expressed his desperation, “There’s been no word from the school. I’m lost. My only focus is saving my daughter.”
The school’s stance has been to stress the importance of student safety and to assure full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation. Mr. Song Mouming has since been taken into custody.
This harrowing tale has stirred public outrage, becoming a widely-discussed topic online. Platforms like Baidu have seen the incident garner millions of views and thousands of comments. Many netizens voiced their indignation, with sentiments such as “Such a despicable person being a teacher!” and “The teacher is a demon.”
Disturbingly, incidents of student maltreatment by educators are not uncommon in China. Despite the Chinese government’s 1986 prohibition of corporal punishment in educational settings, numerous unsettling cases have emerged. Earlier this year, teachers in eastern China were reported abusing students—using techniques as extreme as making them slap each other and using sticks for punishment.
The recurring nature of these episodes underscores an urgent need for reforms and stricter regulations to safeguard students’ welfare.
