Jet Li Lianjie, a renowned figure in martial arts cinema, has recently opened up about the physical challenges he faced early in his career in his autobiography, “Beyond Life and Death: Jet Li Looking for Jet Li.” While Li appeared physically strong in his films from the late 1980s, including “Dragon Fight” and “The Master,” his autobiography reveals a different reality. During this time, he underwent an extreme dieting and training regime that took a significant toll on his health.
Li’s book offers a candid look into the demanding expectations placed upon him to maintain a muscular and fit appearance for his roles. To achieve this, Li adopted a strict diet for six weeks, consuming only unseasoned cereal, boiled chicken breast, and steamed fish with green onions – all with the goal of substantial fat loss. This diet, coupled with rigorous physical training including daily five-kilometer runs and four hours of weight training, left Li physically depleted, despite his muscular appearance.
In an appearance on the Taiwanese TV show “Ask Sisy,” Li shared a frightening incident during filming when he suddenly fainted due to breathlessness. This experience prompted him to consult a traditional Chinese medicine doctor, who informed him that the dieting approach he followed, common in Western practices, had disturbed his body’s natural balance. This consultation was a turning point for Li, as he realized that his pursuit of physical fitness had ironically led to serious health problems.
Li’s reflections in his autobiography highlight the dangers of rapid dieting and intense physical training, especially when done without considering the body’s overall well-being. He warns readers that such extreme measures are not suitable for everyone and can be counterproductive to the goals of physical and mental health.
Now at the age of 60, Li accepts his natural body, stating humorously, “I don’t have six-pack muscles, I have a belly.” Through his personal story, he encourages a more balanced and holistic approach to health and fitness, emphasizing the importance of listening to one’s body and maintaining inner health over external appearances. Li’s autobiography not only provides insight into the struggles he faced as an action star but also serves as a cautionary tale about the potential costs of achieving the idealized on-screen physique.
