Extraordinary Acts of Generosity: Chinese Lottery Winner and Scrap Collector Donate Fortunes to Charity

LifestyleExtraordinary Acts of Generosity: Chinese Lottery Winner and Scrap Collector Donate Fortunes to Charity

In a world often clouded by materialism, two heartening tales of extraordinary generosity from China have captivated the hearts of social media users and beyond. The stories of a lottery winner and a humble scrap collector, both choosing to donate significant portions of their wealth to charitable causes, exemplify selflessness and compassion.

The first story is about a man named Guo from Henan province, who won an astounding 86 million yuan (approximately US$12 million) in the lottery. In a remarkable act of philanthropy, Guo decided to donate 53 million yuan of his fortune to the Henan Sports Development Foundation. When collecting his winnings, Guo, who chose to keep his face hidden under a cartoon character costume – a common practice among lottery winners in China – expressed that the prize money was excessively more than he could ever spend. He decided to keep a smaller portion for himself, planning to invest in real estate, and generously gave away the majority to charity. He emphasized the importance of earning his own living, rather than relying on the lottery windfall.

Meanwhile, in Gansu province, Hu Lei, a scrap collector who has faced his own challenges due to polio, has been silently making a difference in the lives of many. Over the past 15 years, Hu has donated over a million yuan (about US$140,000) to aid around 20,000 children in need. These children, unable to attend formal schooling due to illnesses and conditions, have received financial support for home-schooling, thanks to Hu’s kindness. A moving social media video shows Hu humbly accepting gratitude from a little girl whose life he has touched, insisting that she should thank her parents and teachers instead.

Hu, who grew up an orphan and experienced the kindness of strangers, has been driven by a strong desire to give back and help others in need. His actions have not only changed the lives of countless children but have also inspired many online, with users expressing admiration and gratitude for his selfless deeds.

Both these stories, one of a lottery winner and the other of a modest scrap collector, remind us of the profound impact generosity can have. They serve as powerful examples that no matter one’s financial status, the act of giving can make a significant difference in the world, offering hope and inspiration to many.
