Innovative Grandfather Uses Dog Cone to Curb Granddaughter’s Phone Use, Sparks Online Debate

LifestyleInnovative Grandfather Uses Dog Cone to Curb Granddaughter's Phone Use, Sparks Online Debate

In a humorous and unconventional approach to parenting, a grandfather from Xian, Shaanxi province, China, resorted to using a dog cone to prevent his five-year-old granddaughter from excessive use of her mobile phone. This novel solution has not only amused viewers on Chinese social media but also ignited conversations about parenting strategies in an increasingly digital world.

The idea struck the grandfather on December 7, during a car journey when he noticed his granddaughter engrossed in playing games on her phone. In the vehicle was a brand new dog cone, typically used to prevent dogs from licking their wounds. The grandfather placed the cone around the young girl’s neck, hoping it would distract her from the phone.

The girl’s mother, Yuan, shared that her daughter was initially resistant to wearing the cone, knowing it was meant for dogs. A viral video shows the young girl in the car, visibly upset and protesting against the cone, while her mother playfully reassures her that the pink cone was specially bought for her.

Contrary to expectations, this peculiar method proved to be surprisingly effective. Yuan revealed that after wearing the cone for a few days, her daughter’s desire to use the phone diminished significantly, and they no longer needed the cone.

The incident has captured the imagination of many online, with viewers finding humor in the situation and pondering its broader implications. Some praised the grandfather’s creativity, while others saw it as an opportunity to discuss healthier ways to manage screen time for children. A few commentators humorously suggested that the tactic might be useful for adults suffering from neck issues due to phone addiction.

However, not everyone was convinced of its practicality. Some viewers pointed out the need for more sustainable solutions, such as setting a positive example as parents or engaging children in other activities to divert their attention from electronic devices.

The use of pet accessories in parenting is not entirely new in China. In another instance, a tech blogger had recommended GPS-equipped pet collars for tracking and ensuring children’s safety, which also received considerable attention online.

The story of the grandfather and his granddaughter reflects the challenges parents face in the digital age and highlights the need for innovative and thoughtful approaches to balance technology use among the younger generation.
