Fashion enthusiasts took a break from the catwalks of London Fashion Week to attend the screening of the new documentary series In Vogue: The 90s. The six-part series, which premiered on Disney+, explores one of fashion’s most groundbreaking decades and how it left an indelible mark on mainstream culture. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, along with notable figures from the fashion world, reflects on the trends, designers, and supermodels who defined the 1990s.
Wintour, speaking at the screening, highlighted how the 90s were a turning point for fashion, bringing it into the spotlight as an integral part of pop culture. “I remember how creative it was… models becoming celebrities and personalities, and fashion becoming more open and mainstream,” Wintour said. The decade saw fashion intersect with music, film, and entertainment in a way that hadn’t been done before. Designers like John Galliano and the late Alexander McQueen took the industry by storm with their bold, imaginative collections, while Tom Ford’s tenure at Gucci redefined the luxury brand.
The 1990s also gave rise to the “supermodel” era, where figures like Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Kate Moss became household names. These iconic models, along with stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman, and Kim Kardashian, contribute their thoughts and memories to In Vogue: The 90s, offering a glimpse into a period when fashion shows were more like theatrical performances, marked by elaborate budgets and cutting-edge creativity.
Designer Harris Reed, also present at the screening, emphasized how experimental the fashion world was during this period. “It was ultimate fashion at its height… shows were performances, budgets were much bigger, and things were more experimental,” Reed explained. The 90s, according to Reed, was an era when the industry pushed boundaries and broke free from established rules, setting the stage for fashion’s future evolution.
The screening, held during London Fashion Week, took place amidst the excitement of the Spring-Summer 2025 collections. London Fashion Week is the second stop on the fashion calendar, which began earlier this month in New York and will continue through Milan and Paris. As the fashion world continues to evolve, In Vogue: The 90s offers a nostalgic look back at a pivotal moment in history that still influences today’s trends.
The first three episodes of the series premiered on Disney+ last Friday, with the remaining episodes scheduled to air this coming Friday, giving viewers a comprehensive look at how fashion, music, and celebrity culture intertwined during one of the most vibrant decades in fashion history.
