How Strength Training Helped One Woman Reverse Osteoporosis

LifestyleHealthHow Strength Training Helped One Woman Reverse Osteoporosis

At 57, Jessie Kwong, a retired Hong Kong engineer, was diagnosed with osteoporosis, a disease that weakens bones and increases the risk of fractures. Her diagnosis came as a shock, especially since she led a sedentary lifestyle and had long associated being slim with being healthy. Kwong’s osteoporosis resulted in frequent falls, bruises, and cuts, and her bone density tests showed she was at high risk of fractures.

Like many others in her situation, Kwong had not been taking calcium supplements and avoided dairy products. Her low-calorie diet, focused on staying slim, lacked essential nutrients for bone health. Medication was an option, but the potential side effects, including thigh fractures and jawbone damage, discouraged her. Instead, she decided to take a more holistic approach.

Determined to improve her health, Kwong turned to weight-bearing exercises, known to help slow bone loss. She joined a gym but initially felt intimidated by the unfamiliar environment. With the help of personal trainer Andy Yiu Chi-yau, Kwong set small, achievable fitness goals. Over time, her muscle mass increased, and her balance and posture improved significantly. She no longer fell while walking and felt more confident in her daily movements.

After three years of consistent weight training, her bone density improved, and by July 2024, her test results no longer met the threshold for osteoporosis. The combination of weight training and a nutrient-rich diet helped her regain bone strength and avoid medication.

Inspired by her own success, Kwong partnered with her trainer to open Why Not Fitness, a boutique gym in Wan Chai focused on helping older adults build strength safely. The gym offers a welcoming environment, providing low-impact strength exercises, personalized programs, and guidance on proper technique. The trainers also collaborate with physiotherapists to help clients recovering from injuries transition from rehabilitation to strength building.

Kwong emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet alongside exercise, ensuring clients get enough protein and nutrients. Through talks and workshops at Rotary and sports clubs, she promotes weight training as a vital tool for aging gracefully and maintaining physical function.

Kwong’s journey serves as a reminder that it is never too late to improve health through strength training and a balanced lifestyle.
