CultureShanghai Zoo’s Junjun: The Adorable Bear Cub Captivating Crowds

Junjun, an 11-month-old brown bear cub at a Shanghai zoo, has become a local and online sensation, drawing large crowds eager to watch him play. Standing at 1 meter tall and weighing over 35 kg, Junjun’s playful demeanor and cute appearance have captured the hearts of visitors. Whether he’s frolicking with his favourite tyre or splashing joyfully in his water trough, the cub’s every move brings a smile to those who watch him.

Even on quiet December weekdays when the zoo is mostly empty, Junjun’s enclosure is never without a small crowd. Visitors, especially those familiar with his rise to fame on social media, are eager to catch a glimpse of the energetic cub. “His little movements are really funny and so cute it can’t be any cuter,” said Lin, one of the zoo’s frequent visitors.

Born at the zoo as the first cub of his parents, Junjun has been hand-reared by the zoo’s staff. His keepers provide him with a variety of toys, including his beloved tyre, as well as his favourite treats of beef and apples with honey. As a result, the young bear is not only playful but highly social, frequently interacting with the visitors and keepers.

Junjun’s rise to fame began when videos and images of his antics began circulating on social media, earning him comparisons to Duffy, a popular Disney teddy bear. His endearing appearance and fun-loving nature have turned him into a beloved figure, with many describing him as a ‘living teddy bear.’ “Everyone loves how lively and active he is,” says Yang Junjie, one of Junjun’s keepers.

One of Junjun’s favourite activities is a game of chase with his keepers. He first chases them around his enclosure, only to stop, turn around, and allow them to catch up. This playful back-and-forth keeps both Junjun and his audience entertained, adding to the growing fascination surrounding the young bear.

Junjun’s charm and playful spirit have made him an unlikely celebrity. His popularity at the zoo continues to soar, and his adorable antics bring joy not only to those who visit but to countless others who follow his story online.
