The cast of The Brutalist is unanimous in attributing the film’s acclaim to director Brady Corbet’s exceptional vision. Known for his focus on psychology and human behavior, Corbet has created a compelling and deeply emotional narrative that resonates with audiences and actors alike. “He’s a special filmmaker because he focuses on psychology and behavior, the things we as actors are genuinely drawn to,” said Guy Pearce, who portrays the wealthy industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren. “It was a real treat from start to finish,” he added.
The film tells the epic story of Laszlo Toth, a Hungarian immigrant fleeing the horrors of World War II to start anew in the United States. Played by Oscar-winner Adrien Brody, Toth is an architect whose journey of resilience and creativity defines the heart of the film. Felicity Jones, known for her role in The Theory of Everything, portrays Erzsebet Toth, Laszlo’s wife, whose struggles and integrity further enrich the narrative.
“These characters, particularly Laszlo and Erzsebet, are doing everything they can to preserve their integrity and self-worth,” said Jones. The movie’s unique storytelling and character depth set it apart, showcasing the emotional and cultural struggles of immigrants rebuilding their lives in a foreign land.
Co-written by Corbet’s wife, Mona Fastvold, The Brutalist features a runtime of three hours and 35 minutes, with a 15-minute intermission. The film garnered widespread acclaim at the Venice International Film Festival, earning Corbet the prestigious Best Director award. Distributed by A24, it is set to release in U.S. theaters on December 20.
For Brody, the role holds deep personal significance. His Hungarian heritage and his family’s experiences with war and displacement allowed him to connect profoundly with Laszlo’s story. “My mother’s journey as an artist, her yearning to leave something meaningful behind, resonates deeply with this film,” he shared. Brody also drew inspiration from his grandfather’s struggles with language and assimilation after fleeing war-torn Europe.
The film’s power lies in its collective effort, said Brody, who is now nominated for a Golden Globe and generating Oscar buzz for his performance. “To create work on this level, you need everyone to conspire with you, not against you,” he remarked.
With its powerful performances, emotional depth, and Corbet’s masterful direction, The Brutalist promises to leave a lasting impact on audiences worldwide.
